Orthodox church set on fire in northwestern Ukraine

May 25, 2015. Unknown individuals have set fire to a hospital church built in honor of holy martyr Panteleimon in the city of Kovel, Volyn Region of Ukraine.

The incident occurred in the early hours of May 24. Fire was set to the building on two sides. The firefighters, who were called by an eyewitness, managed to extinguish the fire, the press service for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate has reported.

The church was not damaged, but the fire damaged the Sunday school building located in the basement.

The diocese says a local paper had published an article calling for one of Koval’s hospital churches to be given to the self-proclaimed Kiev Patriarchate the week before the incident.
