Anti-establishment groups throw petrol bombs against Athens Holy Synod offices

August 8, 2016. An orhodox church which houses the central office of the Church of Greece’s Holy Synod was struck by arsonists, as reports the national herald.

Government spokeswoman Olga Gerovasili condemned the attack which happened in the early morning hours at the Moni Petraki church.

The attack is “abhorrent,” Gerovasili said, noting that efforts were underway to find the perpetrators.

“Religious freedom, as enshrined in the Constitution, and the unhindered practice of religious worship are strictly protected by the State and no act of violence against them can be tolerated,” she said.

The attack occurred at 3.10 a.m. when unidentified assailants threw four Molotov cocktails into the yard of the building which detonated, destroying two cars that had been parked outside, Kathimerini said.

The incident is the latest in a barrage of attacks against Churches across the country from self-styled anti-establishment groups, after the arrest of solidarity group members lately for charging into a Church into Thessaloniki.
