The current government of Greece is pushing the Orthodox Church out of the education sphere
June 22, 2017 – The current Cabinet of Minister in Greece, led by Alexis Tsipras, has promised to coordinate any changes in the education system with the Greek Orthodox Church. But this is not happening in practice. Numerous government decisions are being taken without the involvement of church representatives.
The Greek Orthodox Church has published a press release on the well-known Greek Orthodox source www.romfea.gr , calling upon the clergy to gather for a Bishops’ Council in order to discuss the ongoing situation and to familiarize themselves with the new adopted education norms about the teaching of religion.
“The permanent Bishops’ Council of the Hellenic Orthodox Church has gathered today, on June 20, 2017, under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Archbishop of Athens and of Greece Ieronim in order to familiarize about religion courses (in the public education system) after the release of the new edition of the official newspaper.
His Beatitude the Archbishop has declared that the work of the church commission, which includes the work of three Hierarchs for collaboration with the competent members of the Ministry of Education, Science and Religion, has ended in the breaking of the previously agreed-upon agreements and the publication of new regulations pertaining to religion.
Following this disregard for the Greek Orthodox Church, a decision was made to call the Bishops’ Council of the Hellenic Orthodox Church on June 27 in order to provide more information on this regard”.
